Once students have mastered writing a gist using newspaper articles, the strategy is then applied to content area texts to support comprehension and summarizing skills. So in this post i have put together some activities that have helped me to improve my students’ reading level, broken down into 3 categories.
Students compare their answers together. Also, as students move up levels or read across genres, getting the gist may get harder. The main aim for a gist task is to develop the students’ abilities to either skim for the main idea (of a reading text) or to listen for the main idea (of an audio/video clip).
