Students compare their answers together. The main aim for a gist task is to develop the students’ abilities to either skim for the main idea (of a reading text) or to listen for the main idea (of an audio/video clip). Eleni pappa, a british council teacher in greece, provides the answers.
For reading texts, the gist task is often timed. Try these three free and differentiated gist graphic organizers to help your students find the gist and improve reading comprehension. Once students have mastered writing a gist using newspaper articles, the strategy is then applied to content area texts to support comprehension and summarizing skills.
